Last week marked the one-year anniversary of an historic change in our Nation's energy policy -- the July 14, 2008 lifting of the executive branch's 18 year-old ban on responsible energy development along most of America's outer continental shelf (OSC).  Unfortunately, over a year later, we're no closer today to accessing our offshore energy resources than we were last July.  That's true despite the late-September expiration of Congress's own separate ban on responsible offshore exploration, a ban they had renewed reflexively and without debate for 27 consecutive years. 

So, where's our offshore energy?  Where’s the change?  We launched an interactive web page to highlight these questions and provide some perspective on what our government’s been doing over the last year.

Poll after poll continues to show the vast majority of Americans have demanded access to the abundant, affordable energy supplies they rightfully own off our shore and beneath or soil.  Americans are demanding more energy, not less.

Is our government ignoring the will of the majority of the American people?

Consider the events of the past six months. In February, barely two weeks on the job as our nation’s new Interior secretary, Ken Salazar rescinded 130,000 acres of energy-rich land in Utah – areas that the agency later said may be appropriate to reinstate. That same month, the Obama Administration shut down an oil shale leasing program – lands that have a potential recoverable resource three times the size of Saudi Arabia’s oil supplies.  And finally, the Secretary delayed the implementation of a new offshore energy plan, further delaying the responsible exploration and production of the vast taxpayer-owned supplies waiting to be tapped on the OCS.  

Does that make you angry?  If so, then, consider this...

On July 14^th of last year, we had a five-year offshore energy plan in place – one that was set to last until a new plan could be undertaken.  But in April, an activist court in Washington, DC took the unprecedented step of completely throwing out the current policy governing our nation’s offshore energy program. This action cast serious doubt on whether future energy exploration could take place in Alaska – the same state that once provided the U.S. with 20 percent of its oil needs, and could do so again, for decades, if the government allows us to produce the enormous supplies lying fallow off her shores. Plainly put, there is currently no direct means in place whereby new domestic energy production and exploration can take in any of the waters of the United States. 

What's happening here?  Is this the “change” we were promised?  Is this the President's plan to "reduce our dependence of foreign oil?  We want to hear from you.

One of the best kept secrets is that all gasoline engines, with minor carburetor modification, will run on compressed natural gas. (the basic engine remains the same) My proposal is to have the car companies design all of the cars to run on both natural gas and gasoline. Now, the next problem is that there is not an infrastructure to dispense natural gas. The natural gas would have to be compressed to be used in our cars. This compressed gas is similar to the propane gas we use in our grills. There are currently units available that could be installed in gas stations so each gas station could compress there own natural gas (provided they have natural gas piped into the building) or the individual home owner could install a unit in his own garage (if they have natural gas piped into the home) and become completely self sufficient for all of their local driving. Honda currently is selling a car that uses only compressed natural gas as its fuel, but only has a range of 150 miles. There are some engineering problems, it takes a very large tank just to get the 150 mile range. However, this is just an engineering problem that can be solved. Honda also offers a small unit to compress natural gas that can be installed in your garage and will refill the tank in several hours. If Honda, or any other car manufacturer, could extend the range to 300 miles, this would take care of over 90% of local driving for most people. This is not a new or original idea. Many vehicles owned by the federal, state and local governments are currently running on natural gas. For years, fork trucks in factories have been running on propane, the same tanks we use on our grills. So this is existing technology and has been proven to work. All I am suggesting is to expand this concept to a national basis so we can all benefit from this technology. What may be a little different with my proposal is to install natural gas compression units in each garage so the individual could become self sufficient to provide fuel for their own vehicle. THIS DOES NOT REQUIRE GOVERNMENT APPROVAL, IT JUST NEEDS TO BE DONE. This is a concept that could be implemented in months, not years. All we have to do is make use of available technology and put it to work for us. The billions of dollars that we are currently sending overseas each month would stay right here in the US. Just imagine what that would do for our economy. Just think of the jobs it would create.

There are a few engineering problems still to worked out because it requires a large tank just to give you a 150 mile range. However, this is just an engineering problem that can be resolved. If Honda would find a way to double the range to 300 miles per tank that would take care of over 90% of the local driving of most people. Honda also sells a unit that the individual driver can install in his garage to compress the natural gas and in several hours the tank can be refilled. Just think of the gasoline that would be saved if the average person could make his own compressed natural gas in his own garage to run his own car. We would not need to import billions of dollars of oil each year. We would be energy self sufficient as we have the world's largest supply of natural gas. This is not a new or original idea. Many vehicles owned by Federal, state and local governments are currently running on compressed natural gas. All I am suggesting is to expand this existing technology to a national basis. THIS DOES NOT REQUIRE GOVERNMENT APPROVAL, IT JUST NEEDS TO BE DONE. This is a concept that could implemented in months, not years. The billions of dollars we are currently sending overseas each month would stay right here in the U.S. Just think what that would do for our economy. This is not Rocket Science folks, just plain old common sense.

We are allowing the federal government to tell us when we can or when we can't do most everything. This behavior must stop! What is the penalty for ignoring the crazy ideas that come from Washington and doing what we know is best for this nation. Come on America - rise up and show some courage before it is too late. Alot of control and he has a mission to destroy this country and the means to do it. And still people are asleep or are too selfish and apathetic to stand up and band together. Prayer and repentance is the only hope we have left. Educating our children according to our values is imperitive if we get another change to turn things around. Going back to the constitution, going back to a way of life where we care about our neighbors, our country and our family and stepping away from the selfish focus of whats in it for me that Americans seem to have wholly adopted.

The thinking in Washington is without any common sense and basic intelligence and it is time the American people cleaned House and sent all the politicians packing who stand in the way of energy independence as well as re-opening our mining and logging industries to used to employ millions of people.
